Over recent years the mattress industry has seen exponential growth. Now on the market there are a plethora of options available as retailers try to fulfil every individuals sleep needs & cash in on the 121 million euro mattress industry in Ireland. Some options available to the market currently are latex, memory foam, bonnell spring, & individually cased pocket springs and less not forget the Frankenstein-esque concocted hybrid mixes of all the previously mentioned materials.

As well as an increase in the types of mattresses out there we have noticed 2 other worrying trends that are contributing to a massive increase in the number of mattresses being discarded. The first is the emergence of “the white van man” mattresses these are a unregulated, substandard mattress produced precariously in Ireland or imported from the UK sold door to door or on Facebook market place disguised as too good to be true liquidation deals. The fact is these mattresses may look good for a week after you get the packaging off but in reality unsuspecting customers are left having to change their new marketplace mattress deal after only 6 months of use! The second more concerning trend to the market is the emergence of a rapidly increasing number of “mattress in a box” start ups. This allows companies to ships mattresses rolled up in a box directly to the customers door step, but this comes with a catch.. the customers are now buying a mattresses without ever seeing or even laying on it! Crazy we know, and in order to put potential customers minds at ease all these start up companies offer “comfort guaranteed” schemes offering refunds & taking back the mattress free of charge after a 100 or 200 night sleep trial. The amount of these mattresses destined for landfill after trial is nearing on epidemic proportions. That’s why, with your help, we have made it our mission to divert and many mattresses away from landfill & incineration as possible!
